Paterson, NJ – December 1, 2023– The Paterson community is set to embark on a week-long celebration of Kwanzaa, the African American holiday honoring the seven principles of Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith). Hosted by Word Seed Inc., in collaboration with various community organizations, the Kwanzaa festivities will take place from December 26th to January 1st, 2024, offering a diverse range of cultural events, educational workshops, and inspiring performances.

“Kwanzaa is a time to reflect on our rich heritage, reconnect with our community, and reaffirm our commitment to collective empowerment and progress,” said Talena Lachelle Queen, organizer of the Paterson Kwanzaa celebration. “We invite everyone to join us as we celebrate the seven principles of Kwanzaa and embrace the spirit of unity, self-determination, and purpose.”

Each day of the Kwanzaa celebration will be dedicated to a specific principle, featuring engaging activities, thought-provoking discussions, and inspiring performances. Participants can look forward to events such as:

* Libation ceremonies to honor ancestors and set the intention for the day

* Guest speaker presentations on topics relevant to the Kwanzaa principles

* Cultural performances showcasing the diverse talents of the Paterson community

* Interactive workshops on topics such as economic empowerment, youth development, and creative expression

* Interfaith prayer services to foster unity and spiritual connection

The Kwanzaa celebration will culminate with a grand finale on January 1st, featuring a Harambee (community circle) to express gratitude, reaffirm unity, and envision a brighter future for the Paterson community.

“We believe that Kwanzaa has the power to transform individuals, families, and communities,” said Queen “Through this celebration, we aim to strengthen our bonds, uplift our spirits, and inspire positive change in Paterson.”
